The Quiet Infrastructure of Shore Giving in Monmouth
A donor-facing guide to the Monmouth Conservation Foundation, American Littoral Society, Navesink Maritime Heritage Association, Sandy Hook Foundation, and Riverview Medical Center Foundation — where the shore's quiet giving infrastructure lives.
On the shore, the quietest giving is the kind that never announces itself
Long before a Monmouth family writes a check, the institution is already doing the work — holding the easement, staffing the lifesaving station, running the Sea Scout program, tagging the fish. This week's four institutions are where that quiet infrastructure lives: the county's only county-wide land trust, a sixty-year-old marine-conservation society, the Red Bank association that has kept the Navesink's maritime memory alive for a generation, and the nonprofit that keeps the Sandy Hook lifeguard tower open to the public. Together they answer the question a shore family keeps asking: what does it actually mean to give to the place that raised you, and where does that giving land?
Monmouth Conservation Foundation — the county's only county-wide land trust
The Monmouth Conservation Foundation (MCF) is Monmouth County's only county-wide land trust. Established in 1977, it acquires and preserves open space and farmland and conserves natural habitats in support of outdoor recreation, agriculture, clean water, and wildlife — and it has been accredited as a land trust for more than a dozen years.

- By the Foundation's own count: nearly 50 years in service, 9,576 acres preserved, 900 acres actively stewarded, and 46 conservation easements – monmouthconservation.org
- Stewards the Scudder Preserve and runs a conservation-wagon and community-education program for residents of the county – monmouthconservation.org
- Offers monthly giving, a legacy-society program, and a fall "For Conservation" benefit each year – monmouthconservation.org
American Littoral Society — a sixty-year-old marine-conservation society that works the Monmouth shore
The American Littoral Society (ALS) is a national nonprofit that promotes the study and conservation of marine life and habitat and protects the coast from harm. Since 1961 it has run conservation, education, and advocacy work at the places where land and water meet — and its New Jersey work includes the Sandy Hook, Barnegat Bay, and Delaware Bay coasts.

- Runs a fish-tagging program, overnight-trip education, and a membership program that funds its field work – littoralsociety.org
Navesink Maritime Heritage Association — the Red Bank group that keeps the river's memory alive
The Navesink Maritime Heritage Association (NMHA) in Red Bank is a community organization dedicated to preserving the maritime history of the Navesink River and the communities that grew up along it. It runs a Sea Scout program, a youth "River Rangers" initiative, public presentations, and community boatbuilding — and it is the steward of the historic Grover House on the river.

Sandy Hook Foundation — the official nonprofit partner of the National Park Service at Sandy Hook
The Sandy Hook Foundation (SHF) is the official nonprofit partner of the National Park Service at Sandy Hook. It operates the historic Sandy Hook Lifesaving Station, runs a "Ways to Give" program, and has commemorated America 250 with a series of memorial chairs and benches placed at the peninsula's public spaces.

Riverview Medical Center Foundation — the community fund behind the shore's regional hospital
Riverview Medical Center in Rumson is the regional hospital for much of central Monmouth County, and the Riverview Medical Center Foundation is the community fundraising organization that supports the hospital's patient-care, capital, and education missions. For a family that has been treated there — or whose grandparents were — the Foundation is the institutional home for planned giving to the hospital.

Why it matters locally
None of these institutions is a destination, and none of them needs to be. MCF holds the easement that keeps a piece of the Highlands from becoming another subdivision; ALS tags the fish that tells the shore's families how the bay is actually doing; the NMHA keeps the Grover House open and the Sea Scouts on the river; SHF keeps the lifeguard tower a public space rather than a private one; and the Riverview Foundation is the institutional home for the family that wants its legacy giving to land at the hospital that took care of the family. What these five have in common is that the families who fund them — through a monthly gift, through a conservation easement, through a membership, through a memorial bench — are the same families who own the land, work on the shore, and send their children to the schools on the upper shore. The quiet infrastructure of shore giving is not a program; it is a habit, and the habit only continues if a family decides this season to give, to volunteer, or to help a child get on the river.

How Love of Humanity supports this work
Love of Humanity is a Monmouth County 501(c)(3) that works alongside the county's philanthropy institutions and the families who support them as a peer organization, not a funder. We help families understand what these institutions actually do — the easement, the membership, the memorial bench, the community fund — before they commit, we connect planned giving with the institutions that will steward it, and we co-develop the family-education content that turns a single gift into a durable understanding of how the giving will land. If you sit on a board, direct a foundation, or steward a family office in Monmouth, we build co-branded family education with the institutions you already trust. Reach the executive director at partnerships@donatetoloveofhumanity.com.
